When is LDP taking place?
The LDP is a six-month program bookended by two three-day residencies. This year’s participants will engage in six days of training spread over two weekends: February 17-20 in Los Angeles, CA and October 6-9, 2017 in Washington D.C. Applications for the 2017 #LDP6 cohort are now closed.
Who can attend?
Participants must be 18 – 27 years of age and demonstrate interest in cultivating leadership potential and advocating for the Sikh American community. Recent graduates and young professionals are welcome and encouraged to apply.
How much will it cost me?
The entire program fee is $265; it is due upon acceptance, generally one week after the application deadline (fee waiver exceptions below). This subsidized rate includes travel, including flights or ground transportation and all room and board expenses. This rate is made possible by the generous support from community members and corporate sponsors.
Fee Waiver: If you unable to pay the non-refundable $265 application fee, please send an email before the application deadline to SikhLEAD Coordinator Amrita Kaur at [email protected] explaining your financial situation. Please include relevant information such as Pell Grant qualification, income, and any attach any relevant documents (PDF format preferred).
Ability-to-pay will not exclude any candidates and has no bearing on the evaluation process. Your personal information will be kept in the strictest confidence.
What about travel arrangements?
SALDEF will work with participants to make travel arrangements. We will cover the cost of the plane, train or bus ticket. If you are at a driving distance, please clarify and discuss your options during your interview with SALDEF staff.
For example, participants typically plan to arrive in Los Angeles, CA for the first residency by Friday before 5pm and leave the sessions no earlier than 3pm on Monday. Participants fly in and out of the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). We will either pick you up from the airport or arrange your travel to the program via taxi.
Similarly, for the second residency, participants plan to arrive in Washington DC by 5 pm on Friday and leave no earlier than 3 pm on Monday. The nearest airports to the hotel are Dulles Airport (IAD) and Reagan National Airport (DCA). We will give you directions to travel from the airport to the hotel via public transportation or we will help you book a shuttle service from the airport to the hotel.
Where will I stay?
SALDEF staff will arrange for your stay in DC and LA. You will be requested to share a room with another participant. More information will be provided closer to the program dates.
How are participants chosen?
Participants must submit a completed application form. Successful candidates are chosen based on their experience, skills and demonstrated interest in leadership and personal development. We also make a concerted effort to bring in a diverse group in terms of residents states of the participants and interests.
When can I expect to know about the status of my application?
Applicants will be notified about their application status approximately one week after the by January 9, 2017 deadline.
What can I expect to get out of LDP?
The Leadership Development Program seeks to inspire, train, and support young Sikh leaders as they prepare for a lifetime of community engagement and community leadership.
The Leadership Development Program consists of a unique set of personal training and coaching sessions which brings together Sikh American youth for two weekends of leadership training, personal development, and networking opportunities.
The purpose of this opportunity is to develop future leaders committed to exploring and realizing both their personal potential and that of the Sikh American community.
What should I bring?
The dress code during the day is business casual. We will walk from workshops to venues for lunch and dinner, be sure that your formal shoes are comfortable to walk in for up to 20 minutes at a time. There will be some activities that will require walking for sometime– bring comfortable shoes. An umbrella and coat may also be necessary. We recommend that you check the weather in advance of each residency. Dressing in layer is recommended.
Please note that you may be in Washington DC the same weekend of the SALDEF National Gala. In that case, you will be our guest at the Gala. The dress code for the gala is formal evening attire (including Punjabi or Indian evening attire).
